Members of the IWCC Regulatory Affairs and Advocacy Committee met last week in Osnabruck, Germany. The key topics covered in the meeting included:
- An update of recent IWCC work including the India Seminar, the 2026 Technical Seminar and the recent work of the Brass Rod Committee.
- A discussion on the consequences of the hazardous classification of lead based products, the Sevesto Directive and ADR compliance.
- Members then heard an update from Johannes Appel, WV Metalle, on recent workstreams engaging with MEPs, a CBAM update and clarification on ILA Guidance.
- Members then discussed the RMI, EMRT and AMRT
- Finally, members heard an update on the CDA Recycled Content Calculation Methodology and Carbon Accounting Workshop. The committee hopes to engage increasingly with the CDA to build EU/US alignment on this topic before the end of the year.
The event began with a plant tour to the KME Germany Osnabruck Plant. Members were greeted by Claudio Pinassi, CEO of the KME Group, who welcomed members and emphasised the importance of the Regulatory Affairs and Advocacy Committee in the current climate in the European fabricating industry. Members then had the chance to see the rolling mill, the scrapyard and the the €11 million investment in a new refining furnace for copper, which is currently in the commissioning phase (pictured below.) We would like to thank Frank Otten, chair of the committee, and Peter Bohlke for the opportunity to tour their plant and for their hospitality.

A dinner was then held at Weinkruger, a local restaurant, before delegates embarked on an evening tour of Osnabruck. This gave a comprehensive insight into the history of Osnabruck, including its use in the negotiation and signing of the Peace of Westphalia treaty in 1648.
We would like to thank everyone who attended this meeting, and look forward to the next meeting in Amsterdam on the 19th and 20th of November. If you wish to join the Regulatory Affairs Committee, please email iwcc@coppercouncil.org for more information.
